Decathlon, a leading global sports retail brand, launches its new Solar Panels Sustainability Project at its Masinag store. This initiative reflects the brand’s commitment to sustainability. Through a partnership with Skye Renewables Philippines Inc., a solar panel rooftop was built and installed on the Decathlon Masinag store. Both companies entered into a Green Energy Option Program (GEOP) Supply Contract for the project.

The solar panel rooftop boasts a 225.06 kWp system, expected to generate over 2.7GWh of renewable power over the 10-year contract period. This translates to roughly 30% of the store’s yearly energy consumption being covered by on-site renewable energy, guaranteeing access to a low-carbon source.

“The completion of the Solar Panel project is a significant milestone as we pursue our global decarbonization strategy and achieve 100% use of renewable energy,” shared Hans Iff, President of Decathlon Philippines. “At Decathlon, we strive to integrate sustainability into our daily practices, positively impacting our environment. Partnering with Skye Renewables, a company sharing our commitment, brings us great pleasure.”

Gary Espino, Head of Philippines for Skye Renewables, expressed his pride in working with Decathlon and supporting their transition to clean energy. “This project aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which we hold in high regard,” he said.

From Urgency to Action: Decathlon’s Sustainability Efforts Take Shape

This project exemplifies the tangible outcomes of Decathlon’s dedication to sustainability, being the first on-site renewable energy source in Decathlon Philippines. The company is confident in accelerating its sustainability efforts not only in the area of renewable energy but also across the entire country.

Decathlon’s Sustainability Goes Beyond Solar Panels

This project is just one aspect of Decathlon’s comprehensive sustainability strategy. Their circularity model includes Buy Back and Second Life programs. Through these programs, Decathlon offers customers the option to sell back used Decathlon products, which are then repaired and given a “second life” by being resold at a discounted price.

Decathlon further reduces its carbon footprint through sustainable practices in transportation logistics, including sea freight and bike deliveries, alongside ecomobility initiatives. The company also offers eco-designed products that maintain functionality while minimizing environmental impact. These products are recognized with LEED and EDGE certifications. Additionally, Decathlon prioritizes high-efficiency store materials. Decathlon Masinag secured its LEED Certification in 2020, while Decathlon Fairview focuses on water and energy savings alongside sustainable construction practices. Decathlon Cebu holds an EDGE Certification, and Decathlon Fairview holds the distinction of being the first-ever mall store in the country to receive Clark, Pasay EDGE green building certification in 2022.
