SM Supermalls is making recycling more convenient with the launch of its Green Recycling Machine (GRM), introduced last March 16 at the SM Mall of Asia Hypermarket. The new machine is designed to encourage mall-goers to recycle PET bottles in a quick, hassle-free way while supporting SM’s sustainability initiatives.
The SM Green Recycling Machine (GRM) transforms everyday mall visits into meaningful acts of environmental responsibility. Designed with users in mind, it empowers communities to conveniently dispose of PET plastic beverage bottles, helping reduce plastic waste while building long-term sustainable habits.
All collected plastics are properly processed and recycled, supporting a circular economy and advancing SM’s commitment to a waste-free future. This initiative is part of the SM Green Movement, SM Supermalls’ environmental sustainability platform that inspires communities to adopt greener lifestyles, all for you, and for a greener tomorrow.
How the SM Green Recycling Machine Works
Using the GRM is simple and user-friendly. Users start by tapping “Green Recycle” on the touchscreen to activate the machine. Once activated, empty PET bottles can be inserted one at a time. After completing the process, users tap “Completed” on the screen.
According to Belinda Gonzales, Section Head for SM Supermalls Corporate Compliance for Sustainability, the GRM is designed to make recycling accessible for everyone. “If you have your empty PET bottle, you can bring it here, click on the touchscreen, and the door will open. You put your bottles one by one and wait until the screen acknowledges it. The machine will close automatically and compress the bottles inside,” she explained.
The machine accepts PET bottles in specific size ranges. One version accommodates bottles from 250ml to 1 liter, while another accepts PET plastic beverage bottles ranging from 500 mL to 2 liters to ensure proper and high-quality recycling.
To improve efficiency, the GRM automatically compresses bottles after five or six entries. Each unit can hold between 300 to 500 crushed PET bottles, ensuring proper storage before they are sent for processing.
All collected PET bottles are transported to Sentinel Upcycling, where they are repurposed into benches and trash bins. These items are often donated to underprivileged communities, reinforcing the social impact of the initiative.

Demonstrating this commitment firsthand, RD Pammit joined in a live demonstration of the SM Green Recycling Machine (GRM) alongside Mr. Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls. This collaborative engagement highlights the essential partnership between government leadership and the private sector in driving innovative environmental solutions.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from Jose Rizal Elementary School, National University – MOA, Sentinel Upcycling Technologies, Manly Plastics, Inc., the Pasay City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), the Environmental Management Bureau–Central Office, and SM Cares.
The initiative aims to make recycling enjoyable, simple, and convenient for mallgoers. Collected PET bottles will be picked up by a partner upcycling facility and transformed into new plastic products.
What You Can Recycle and Proper Preparation
The GRM is specifically designed to accept clean PET plastic beverage bottles. This ensures that the recycling process remains efficient and produces high-quality recycled materials.
Before inserting bottles into the machine, users are encouraged to follow proper preparation steps. Bottles should be empty, clean, and dry. Rinsing and drying them beforehand helps maintain the quality of recyclable materials. Caps may be left on the bottles.
The machine does not accept certain materials. These include glass, aluminum cans, dirty or contaminated containers, plastic cups, straws, food containers, and other types of plastics. These items should be disposed of in appropriate recycling bins instead.
By focusing only on clean PET bottles, the GRM minimizes contamination and ensures a smoother and more effective recycling process.
Encouraging Participation Through Sustainability Initiatives
SM Supermalls continues to explore ways to encourage more people to participate in the recycling program. Gonzales shared that incentives such as discounts or coupons from mall tenants may be introduced in the future.
At present, the initiative is focused on supporting Sentinel Upcycling in producing more useful items from recycled materials. These include benches and other community-focused products that are often donated to underprivileged areas.
With thousands of visitors passing through SM malls daily, the GRM initiative has the potential to significantly influence consumer behavior. It promotes responsible waste disposal while integrating sustainability into everyday mall experiences.
