Conrad Manila has announced the 32nd installment of its “Of Art and Wine” series, featuring a new collection of works by award-winning artist Stella Rojas. The exhibition, titled “Balade”, presents 33 pieces inspired by Rojas’ extensive travels across Paris and the French countryside, offering viewers a glimpse into her artistic journey through Europe. This event is part of Conrad Manila’s ongoing commitment to showcasing Filipino talent in their hotel’s art gallery.
A Stroll Through Paris and Beyond
The term “Balade,” meaning to stroll or wander in French, perfectly captures the essence of this exhibit. Visitors to the Conrad Manila Gallery C are invited to experience a visual journey through the charming streets of Paris, as well as other European destinations, through Rojas’ unique lens. General Manager Fabio Berto of Conrad Manila expressed excitement about this final exhibit for 2024, stating:
“We are honored to have our final exhibit this 2024 with Ms. Rojas, who truly embodies impeccable Filipino artistry.”
Rojas’ works include not only scenes from France but also imagery from Italy, Ireland, Norway, and Poland. Her paintings feature a diverse range of subjects. The landscapes depict sweeping views of the European countryside, capturing the vast beauty and diverse scenery of France and beyond. Her statue portraits present striking depictions of both male and female figures, highlighting the intricate details of classical sculpture. Additionally, the collection includes large-scale close-ups of flora and fauna, where Rojas skillfully brings out the vivid textures and colors of nature, creating an immersive experience for the viewer.
Despite the European subjects, Rojas has used a distinctly Filipino color palette, characterized by vibrant and intense hues, making her works stand out from traditional European art.
Art as a Gateway to Exploration
Through her artwork, Rojas encourages viewers to embrace the spirit of travel and discovery. She believes that stepping outside one’s comfort zone—geographically and creatively—opens new pathways for self-discovery and cultural understanding. Her personal experience in Paris since 1989 has had a profound influence on her work, as she describes in her own words:
“One distinct quality to note is, although the theme of ‘Balade’ is Parisian, French, and European scenery, the palette is ‘un-European.’ It is, in fact, more Filipino due to the vivid, pure, and intense colors.”
Rojas sees life as an endless voyage, filled with opportunities to experience new cultures and ideas. Her art serves as a reflection of this philosophy, encouraging others to explore beyond the familiar.
The exhibit launch for “Balade” at Conrad Manila was an elegant affair, attended by several prominent figures in the art and hospitality industries. SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation President Elizabeth Sy, Executive Vice President Peggy Angeles, and French Ambassador to the Philippines, Marie Fontanel, were among the distinguished guests who graced the event. Conrad Manila’s General Manager, Fabio Berto, was also present, along with the featured artist, Stella Rojas. Together, they led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially opening the exhibit to the public. The event marked the beginning of the showcase, which will run from October 22, 2024, to January 04, 2025 at the hotel’s Gallery C.
