Epson, a global technology leader, has released its FY2023 Southeast Asia Sustainability Report, highlighting its commitment to transparency, corporate responsibility, and environmental stewardship. Aligned with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, the report showcases Epson’s efforts to expand beyond environmental initiatives to include broader social and governance impact disclosures.
In support of Seiko Epson Corporation’s (Epson Global) ambitious goal of becoming carbon-negative and underground resource-free by 2050, Epson Southeast Asia (Epson SEA) has taken concrete steps to make a significant impact. These initiatives include disclosing carbon emissions, refining hiring practices, establishing whistleblowing channels, expanding training opportunities, and phasing out the use of plastic bottles in corporate offices.
Key milestones achieved in FY2023 include:
- Waste Reduction: Launching trash collection programs in the Philippines and Malaysia.
- Data Management: Developing a structured system for sustainability data collection.
- Green Certifications: Achieving BCA Green Mark Gold certification for Epson’s Singapore office.
- Partnerships: Collaborating with WWF’s Earth Hour initiative to promote energy-saving actions.
Place-Based Approach to Sustainability
Epson SEA’s sustainability strategy is tailored to address the unique environmental challenges in each market, fostering a global movement towards a more sustainable future. Aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Epson SEA has adopted a localized approach to sustainability.
In the Philippines, Epson has successfully implemented the following initiatives:
- Corporate Waste Collection Program: Encouraging dealers to recycle waste such as empty ink cartridges and boxes.
- Adopt-a-School Program: Donating printers, projectors, and scanners to schools.
- Food Shed Project: Establishing a food shed farming system in partnership with WWF.
Data-Driven Sustainability
This year marks the first time Epson SEA has disclosed specific data in its sustainability report that adheres to GRI standards, laying a foundation for future progress. Tan May Lin, Sustainability Task Force Leader, emphasized the importance of transparency in building trust and accountability.
Championing Environmental Stewardship
As part of Epson Global’s Environmental Vision 2050, Epson SEA has set targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through product innovations, investment in updated facilities, and purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). In December 2023, Epson Global became the first Japanese manufacturer to switch to renewables for 100% of its electricity needs worldwide. Additionally, Epson SEA phased out the sales and distribution of laser printers in 2023, transitioning fully to inkjet printers.
Future Plans
Epson SEA has outlined its sustainability roadmap, which includes:
- Achieving BCA Green Mark certification for all other facilities in Southeast Asia.
- Leveraging digital technologies to streamline processes and optimize resource allocation.
