Leading AI device ecosystem company HONOR has entered into a strategic technical collaboration with ARRI, the world renowned designer and manufacturer of professional camera technology for cinematic storytelling. This partnership marks a significant step in extending established cinematic standards into the rapidly evolving world of mobile imaging.
By combining HONOR’s advanced mobile imaging capabilities with ARRI’s century long heritage in defining cinematic image quality, the collaboration reflects a shared ambition to unlock new creative possibilities. The partnership also aims to extend cinematic standards for visual expression from the world of high end filmmaking to the next generation of content creators.
The collaboration represents a major development in the evolution of mobile imaging technology. As smartphones continue to play an increasingly important role in content creation, HONOR and ARRI aim to bridge the gap between professional cinema technology and everyday mobile devices.
“HONOR is pioneering a new era of mobile imaging, where technology exists to inspire creativity and storytelling,” says James Li, CEO of HONOR. “ARRI has defined the visual language of cinema for generations. Through this collaboration, we are bringing those cinematic standards and professional workflows into mobile imaging, enabling creators to craft stories with greater authenticity and emotional depth.”
A Century of Cinematic Excellence as Foundation for Mobile Content Creators
For more than a century, ARRI has played a key role in shaping how cinematic stories are told. From the early days of film production to the most advanced digital camera systems used in modern filmmaking, ARRI has been instrumental in defining professional image quality and cinematic standards.
This long standing commitment to innovation and excellence has been recognized with 20 Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. These achievements highlight ARRI’s influence in advancing imaging technology that supports storytelling across the global film industry.
As smartphones continue to evolve into powerful creative tools, the role of mobile devices in professional filmmaking has grown significantly. Filmmakers, content creators, and storytellers now increasingly rely on mobile technology for capturing high quality visuals in a wide range of production environments.
“Today, consumer smartphones have already become a serious tool in professional filmmaking, being used on blockbusters across the globe. That’s why we believe it is time to bring these worlds even closer together. For the first time ever, core elements of ARRI Image Science are being integrated directly into a consumer device,” says David Bermbach, Managing Director at ARRI.
Translating ARRI Image Science into Mobile Technology
In the world of cinema, image science is not simply a filter or visual effect. It is the underlying foundation that determines how an image is captured, processed, and displayed. Image science influences how colors appear natural, how highlights and shadows are rendered, and how visual consistency is maintained from the moment of capture to the final screen.
Through this collaboration, ARRI’s Image Science principles are being applied to HONOR’s mobile imaging architecture. The goal is to translate the core cinematic imaging philosophies developed for professional filmmaking into mobile devices designed for modern creators.
Applying these principles to smartphones presents unique technical challenges. Mobile devices operate with smaller sensors, highly integrated system on chips, and different optical stacks compared to traditional cinema cameras. Bandwidth limitations and compact hardware design also require a different approach to implementing cinematic imaging standards.
“Smartphones operate under fundamentally different constraints: smaller sensors, highly integrated SoCs, different optical stacks, and different bandwidth limits. The challenge is not to replicate cinema hardware, but to translate the underlying principles into compact, real-time mobile architectures,” says Dr. Benedikt von Lindeiner, Vice President at ARRI and responsible for the technical collaboration with HONOR. “Our goal is to bring a true cinematic aesthetic to smartphone imaging natural color, gentle highlight roll-off, and a sense of depth that feels authentic to how stories are meant to be seen. Creators should be able to move seamlessly from mobile capture into professional post-production workflows.”
The collaboration focuses on bringing professional visual standards to smartphone cameras while ensuring the technology remains efficient enough for real time mobile use. By translating ARRI’s cinematic expertise into a compact mobile framework, HONOR aims to provide creators with more advanced tools for storytelling through their smartphones.
The first results of this collaboration will debut in the upcoming HONOR ROBOT PHONE later this year. The launch is expected to showcase how cinematic image science can be adapted to mobile technology, opening new opportunities for creators who rely on smartphones for video production, photography, and visual storytelling.
