Conrad Manila has launched the 33rd edition of its celebrated “Of Art and Wine” series with an intriguing exhibit titled Machine of Thoughts. Featuring 53 dynamic works, the exhibit showcases the artistry of five prominent architect-artists from The Authenticity Zero Collective (TAZC): Cocoi Base, Gab Brioso, Almi Domingo, Walther Ocampo, and Robin Ravago. The collection delves into the intersections of form, space, and human interaction, offering viewers a thought-provoking exploration of non-representational art.
“Conrad Manila is committed to championing local artists and fostering creative diversity through our Of Art and Wine series of exhibits at Gallery C. In the new year, we are particularly excited to introduce a dynamic line-up of six exhibits, starting with Machine of Thoughts, which will offer our guests a fresh perspective through immersive and unconventional art, and ignite conversations about the evolving relationship between humanity and the material world,” says Fabio Berto, General Manager of Conrad Manila.
Running from January 7 to March 8 at Gallery C, the exhibit challenges conventional boundaries with artworks that function both as independent creations and parts of a larger metaphorical “machine” that generates new ideas. Each piece invites viewers to reassess preconceived notions about design, culture, and materiality.
About the Artists
The five artists of TAZC bring unique perspectives and expertise to Machine of Thoughts, blending architectural precision with artistic creativity:
- Cocoi Base: An architect and visual artist from Bicol, Base uses his art to bring architectural concepts to life when physical limitations prevent their realization. His works, distilled to essential geometries and forms, have been exhibited at major art venues like the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Gateway Gallery. Base’s first solo exhibit, Structures and Experience, debuted at Gateway Gallery in 2023.
- Gab Brioso: A designer, artist, and architect, Brioso explores the intersection of digital and analog processes. His holistic approach to design enhances both digital and physical experiences. He holds a master’s degree in fine arts and is a founding member of TAZC. His work has appeared in prominent exhibitions, including Art Fair Philippines and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
- Almi Domingo: Known for his bold geometric explorations, Domingo employs etching techniques on acrylic sheets to create dynamic visual compositions. A graduate of the Technological Institute of the Philippines, he has showcased his work at Art Camp, Art Fair Philippines, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Domingo is also a founding member of TAZC.
- Walther Ocampo: Combining art and architecture, Ocampo uses geometry and philosophical inquiry to create multi-dimensional works, from drawings to sculptures. He is the founding director of The Brown Bauhaus and TAZC, with an impressive exhibition history, including Art Fair Philippines and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. His work has received accolades, such as an honorable mention at the GSIS National Art Competition.
- Robin Ravago: An architect-artist based in Manila, Ravago’s creations explore the formal qualities of objects and their potential relationships through various media. His works have been widely exhibited, including at Art Fair Philippines and the Tagaytay Art Fair. Ravago is also an educator, teaching architectural theory and design at leading institutions.
