I never thought I would get a tattoo, but now I finally got one. Make that two—I had both my eyebrows microbladed.
Our eyebrows are one of the first things people notice, besides that amazing smile, of course. And if there is one thing, all experts would agree on when it comes to looking your best as you age, having great eyebrows to frame your face makes all the difference.
I don’t normally wear makeup or put a lot of thought into how my eyebrows look, but recently, a makeup artist on my photoshoot told me that “framing your eyes with the perfect arch of your eyebrows is important as it will bring out and enhance the beauty of your eyes.” But even though the makeup artist already taught me how to groom my eyebrows with makeup, I still find it too tedious and unnecessary. Then, I discovered microblading.
So, what exactly is microblading?
Microblading is an embroidery of small, precise strokes that mimic the effect of real hairs using a nano blade to draw on the strokes individually. The initial procedure may take up to a couple of hours, and the eyebrows will appear darker immediately after the initial treatment. It is possible that the color will fade after few weeks and a touch-up may be needed.
What is the difference between eyebrow tattoos and microblading?
There are several differences between the regular eyebrow tattoo and brow microblading. First, the more traditional style of the brow tattoo uses pigments/ink with heavy metals that tend to look green or blue over time and is permanent. On the other hand, microblading is semi-permanent and uses organic pigment that naturally fades like as if your brows are never done. Therefore, it allows redesigning of the brows based on the current facial feature (human face features change every 5-10 years due to aging). Second, traditional tattooing uses a machine while microblading as of the moment was done using a handheld tool with a nano blade.
The first step was the application of topical anesthesia that lasted around 20 minutes. Next is a consultation with the esthetician, where we discussed my desired eyebrow look, chose a color, and drew the initial outline of the procedure area. They asked me whether I was happy or not with the brow pattern before proceeding to the next step. Once satisfied with the basic shape and symmetry, the area is traced over and semi-permanent pigment is applied with a disposable microblading hand tool. This procedure uses a manual hand tool and not a machine. For me, the procedure was painless, so it wasn’t a “scary” experience overall considering I’m scared of needles. The whole process lasted for 2 hours. They asked me not to get my eyebrows wet for three days for post-care. They also gave me a repair cream to be used at least 2x per day for 5 days as the brows need to be kept moist.
Korean beauty consultant Ms. LK Park did the procedure on me. Apart from being a certified professional esthetician, she is also the head instructor for permanent make-up of Mi-Yong Alliance with a LEVEL 4 ITEC certification.
In summary, Microblading is a new trend that gives natural looking, hair-like strokes, ideal for those who want to enhance or reconstruct a natural looking brows. At first, I was extremely nervous and hesitant to undergo microblading procedure because it’s on your FACE. No way to hide it if anything goes wrong—the face area is too precious to mess up. But the more research I did the more I convinced myself to do it. Technically, it’s not even a tattoo because it’s not permanent. The ink will fade between 1 to 5 years depending on your skin type and general lifestyle. But like any other procedure in the market today, this is one procedure for which you need to do thorough research and make sure you’re working with professionals.
Do The Research
One of the most important things to consider when considering microblading is the clinic that will carry out the procedure. The person doing the microblading should be a professional esthetician who has undergone the appropriate training. This trend is not going anywhere, so be sure you choose the one who can give you the results you are looking for. When it comes to semi-permanent/permanent treatments, it’s not advisable to shop with a budget in mind. If you can’t afford the price of the professional you wish, settling for less may lead to much regret. If you hire a professional, you will only need to pay once, hire an amateur and you will be adding on costs to fix it. So it’s best to save up and be sure you are happy with the results in the end. The good thing about Hallyu Secret Aesthetics is that the estheticians they have are the same people who teach the procedure to other estheticians. This means you can be sure you get the very best from the people who teach it.
