We first visited Hamilo Coast in August 2010 when my aunt bought a condominium there. Despite the bad weather during that visit, I could already tell the place was beautiful—I even mentioned on my Facebook status how stunning it was at that time. Fast forward to today, with all the resort amenities now available to the public, the resort is even more beautiful than ever.
From full-sized sports courts for basketball, tennis, badminton, and squash to bowling alleys, billiards, and even KTV and video game rooms, there’s no shortage of entertainment at the impressive Pico de Loro Country Club. Guests can jog by the lagoon, rent a yacht for a cove tour, or dive into the deep blue sea for a thrilling underwater experience. The resort also features scenic jogging trails, and guests can enjoy the unique Mangrove Tour to learn about the vital ecosystem. Our recent 3-day, 2-night adventure at Pico Sands allowed us to experience firsthand the resort’s diverse offerings. Our Room
We recently had the pleasure of staying for three days and two nights in the corner deluxe room at Pico Sands Hotel, a relaxing escape perfect for family and friends. Our room on the 6th floor was incredibly spacious at around 37 sqm and featured a soft king-size bed that comfortably fit two adults and one child. Even with an extra bed we requested for another adult, there was still plenty of space to move around comfortably. A unique feature of this room is the option to connect it to a Premier Lagoon View room, allowing friends or children to have their own space while still being easily accessible.
Large windows bathed the space in natural light, offering captivating views of the lush mountains and tranquil lagoon from the veranda. The calming neutral tones and furnishings created an inviting atmosphere, perfect for unwinding.
The room amenities truly enhanced our stay. The air conditioning was refreshingly cold even during the hottest weather, unlike some other resorts we’ve experienced (I personally love a cold room!). The high-speed Wi-Fi was a huge plus for me, as I was able to work remotely and even publish a few articles during our trip. The spacious desk easily accommodated my laptop and portable monitor, making it a comfortable workspace. Other convenient amenities included an in-room refrigerator, a hot and cold shower, premium toiletries, a flat-screen television, an in-room safe, and an iron and ironing board (which came in handy for a few wrinkled clothes!).
The hotel’s commitment to sustainability is evident in thoughtful touches like refillable glass water bottles and filtered water stations. Culinary Delights at Hamilo Coast
Our culinary adventure at Pico Sands Hotel in Pico de Loro was nothing short of extraordinary. It began with a delicious lunch at Pico Restaurant and Bar, where we savored the flavors of their carefully crafted dishes, followed by a magical private dinner in a dome on the beach under the starry night sky.
The next morning, we had the pleasure of trying the Ultimate Filipino Breakfast at Sun Coral Cafe. The spread was a delightful array of local flavors, and we even had the opportunity to meet the talented chef who prepared our meal, Chef Marlon Granados.
This breakfast was the perfect start to our day, as we embarked on a jam-packed schedule of activities, including an island tour to Santelmo Cove, where we indulged in a boodle fight lunch also prepared by Chef Marlon Granados.
As the sun began to set, we embarked on a mesmerizing sunset cruise, where we were served a delightful charcuterie board and wine, the perfect accompaniment to the breathtaking views. After the cruise, we enjoyed an enchanting private dinner at the Garden Steps, where the culinary team’s creativity shone through in each dish. For our third day’s breakfast, we returned to Pico Restaurant and Bar for their equally impressive breakfast buffet, which had various food stations, including salads, breads, mains, arroz caldo, champorado, an egg station, and cereals. There were also fresh juices, hot chocolate, and brewed coffee to complement the meal.
Our final culinary adventure took us to Lagoa, where we sampled a sustainable menu featuring locally sourced ingredients and thoughtfully prepared plates. Pico Sands Hotel’s diverse culinary offerings cater to every taste and occasion, ensuring a truly unforgettable dining experience.

Grab N Go, located in the Country Club Lobby, is the perfect spot for a quick pick-me-up. Meanwhile, the Juice Box, situated on the ground floor of the Pico de Loro Beach Club, serves up refreshing fruit and vegetable blends, providing a healthy and delicious option for those seeking nourishment by the beach. While Pico de Loro is known for its stunning beach and outdoor adventures, the resort also offers a variety of indoor options, perfect for guests of all ages. Just steps from your hotel room, Pico de Loro Country Club presents a comprehensive selection of indoor sports and entertainment. Challenge your friends to a game of basketball, tennis, badminton, or squash on the full-sized courts, or get everyone involved in a lively game of bowling or billiards. For those who prefer to stay active indoors, the Country Club also has a fully equipped gym.
Families with children will delight in Club Pico, a colorful and engaging play area for children located within the Country Club, complete with arts and crafts activities and plenty of space for play and learning. My niece Arkisha actually enjoyed learning how to make paper frogs! You can inquire about the scheduled kids’ activities at the reception area and register your kids.
During my recent stay, my sister, niece Arkisha, and I had a blast trying our hand at bowling. Unfortunately, I didn’t win (I rarely play, haha!), but we all had a great time. The modern facilities and friendly staff made for a truly enjoyable experience. In addition to the Country Club offerings, Pico Sands Hotel itself has a host of indoor activities to keep you entertained. Choose from darts, video games, music rooms, and more. It’s the perfect way to relax and unwind after a day of exploring the outdoors. Simply inquire at the hotel reception about the various indoor activities available, and they’ll be happy to provide you with information and help you make reservations if needed.
Island Tour to Santelmo Cove
Santelmo Cove boasts untouched beauty, with pristine white sand lining its crystal-clear waters. This picturesque beach highlights the charm of Santelmo Cove, just a five-minute speedboat ride from Pico de Loro Cove. According to our bangkero (boatman), sea turtles frequent Santelmo Cove to lay their eggs. The abundance of Giant Clams, locally known as “Taklobo” in the Philippines, and diverse marine life make Santelmo Cove ideal for snorkeling and diving. Due to its rich biodiversity, Santelmo Cove, along with Pico de Loro Cove, is being declared a marine protected area by the local government.
Upon reaching Santelmo Cove, our boat stopped at the nearby marine sanctuary for a quick snorkeling/freediving session to see the Giant Clams. The vibrant corals and fish in the area were stunning. In fact, it was the first time I had seen neon green corals, despite years of freediving. This dive spot is truly beautiful, and I hope the local government can ensure its protection. After all, marine sanctuaries are a diver’s paradise, making scuba or snorkeling gear a must for visitors to Santelmo Cove. During our visit, we saw many fish and Giant Clams. Our bangkero informed us that the shallow bay of Santelmo Cove is a nursery for baby blacktip reef sharks, and the beach is a nesting ground for sea turtles. The cove’s reef is also home to a wide variety of corals. Santelmo Cove has become a sanctuary for both marine life and those seeking tranquility by the sea. Its crystal-clear waters conceal a vibrant coral reef ecosystem, making it a treasure trove of biodiversity.
We docked at the beach afterward and had it all to ourselves. My 8-year-old niece, Arkisha, thoroughly enjoyed our trip. I admire her bravery as she fearlessly explored the open water while snorkeling with me. We couldn’t resist exploring the uncrowded beach and sinking our feet into the soft sand. Footwear was unnecessary except on the rocky far side of Santelmo Cove, which offered stunning views and was perfect for photos. Unfortunately, I only discovered this area shortly before leaving, so I didn’t have time to capture any pictures of myself there. The clear water of Santelmo Cove was so inviting that we went for a swim at midday. The shallow water extends several meters from the shore, making it safe for children and non-swimmers.
Despite the slightly murky conditions during our freediving session due to the weather, Santelmo Cove’s beauty was undeniable. I can only imagine how breathtaking the dive spot would be under clear skies. I can’t wait to go back soon and explore the beautiful Santelmo reefs in all their glory. In fact, given another chance to visit under sunny conditions, we’ll definitely write a feature about diving here in Santelmo Cove – a true gem waiting to be explored!

Our second day at Pico Sands Hotel ended on a magical note with the unforgettable Sunset Cruise. Boarding the luxurious yacht felt like entering a world of indulgence, setting the stage for an enchanting experience. As we cruised through Hamilo Coast’s pristine waters, the sun began its descent, painting the sky with a kaleidoscope of colors that took our breath away.
Sipping on red wine and savoring the delectable charcuterie board, we found ourselves in a state of pure bliss as the calming waves gently rocked our vessel. The 1.5-hour journey took us through diverse marine sanctuaries, each revealing its unique beauty and the region’s rich biodiversity. While the yacht’s interior remained exclusive to its owner, the bow and main deck became our haven, offering the best views and endless photo opportunities.

Mangrove Tour
My recent Mangrove Tour at Hamilo Coast was an eye-opening adventure, showcasing Pico Sands Hotel’s commitment to preserving this unique ecosystem. As part of their on-site adventure tours, this trip not only offers guests a chance to connect with nature but also highlights the importance of protecting these vital habitats.
We began with a short, informative walk through the forest, where posters detailed the crucial role mangroves play in reforestation and shoreline protection. It was fascinating to learn how these trees filter sediment, stabilize the soil, and act as a natural barrier against storms and erosion. Our guide shared the inspiring story of Hamilo Coast’s partnership with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature Philippines in preserving this 10-hectare sanctuary, home to over 10,000 mangrove trees. They even mentioned how candidates of Miss Earth had participated in mangrove-planting activities here, demonstrating the widespread recognition of this ecosystem’s importance.

Boarding canoes, we paddled through the tranquil waterways, surrounded by towering 50-foot mangroves. The canopy of leaves created a cool, shaded tunnel, and the air felt crisp and clean. Our guide pointed out endemic plant and bird species, explaining the delicate ecological balance that the mangroves support. They also highlighted the diverse creatures that thrive in this unique habitat, including mud crabs, mud lobsters, various fish species like banak, bidbid, bangus, biya, and tilapia, shrimp, sugpo na bundok, clams, and snails. We also learned about the medicinal properties of certain mangrove species, with materials from these trees being traditionally used to treat various conditions, even kidney stones and other ailments.
This tranquil boat ride, lasting about an hour, not only showcased the stunning scenery but also instilled a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of nature and the importance of sustainable tourism. It was a truly enriching experience, leaving me with a renewed commitment to protecting these precious ecosystems.
Aqua Adventures
Pico Sands Hotel, located in the stunning Pico de Loro Cove, offers a thrilling escape for those seeking aquatic adventures. Make the most of your beach getaway with an array of exhilarating motorized and non-motorized water activities. While I was scheduled to try kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, time slipped away as I indulged in other exciting experiences during my stay. I look forward to exploring the cove by kayak and gliding across the calm waters on a paddleboard on my next visit to Pico Sands.
Beyond the water, there’s plenty of fun to be had on the shore. Beach volleyball, beach tennis, beach football, and beach frisbee are all available for free, inviting both members and non-members to enjoy the sand and sun. Rain, The Spa
After a delightful dinner at Pico Sands Hotel’s Garden Steps, we retreated to the tranquil oasis of Rain, The Spa. The spa’s elegant decor and soothing aroma of essential oils instantly set the mood for relaxation. We indulged in the signature “Awaken the Senses” massage, a 1-hour aromatherapy experience that melted away our fatigue. Skilled therapists use specially blended oils and gentle yet firm strokes to release tension and promote deep relaxation.
The fragrant oils, chosen for their therapeutic properties, further enhanced the experience, leaving us feeling refreshed and revitalized. As we emerged from the spa, we felt completely renewed, both physically and mentally. The Awaken the Senses massage was the perfect ending to a memorable day in Pico De Loro.
Overall
Our stay at Pico Sands Hotel was truly exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with warmth and hospitality by the friendly and attentive staff. The accommodations were comfortable and luxurious, the dining options were diverse and delicious, and the activities offered were both exciting and relaxing. Despite the unfortunate weather, we still managed to have an amazing time and create lasting memories.
