Ballet Manila continues its 30th anniversary season by bringing back one of the most beloved classical works in ballet history—Swan Lake. With performances scheduled at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City, the production features top-tier ballet artists from the San Francisco Ballet and Ballet Manila’s own principal dancers.
Celebrating Excellence in Classical Ballet
“Swan Lake” holds a special place in Ballet Manila’s history, and its return is a defining moment in the company’s Pearl Year. Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s CEO and artistic director, shares the importance of this production, saying, “Bringing this masterpiece to life for our 30th anniversary season is very monumental as it underscores Ballet Manila’s dedication to the highest standards of classical ballet.”
Known as one of the most technically demanding and emotionally expressive ballets, Swan Lake challenges performers with the dual roles of Odette (the White Swan) and Odile (the Black Swan). For Macuja Elizalde, the work is deeply personal, as she once performed the iconic lead role. “Swan Lake has always been one of my most beloved roles. The duality of Odette and Odile pushes a ballerina to her limits, both technically and emotionally,” she explains.
Featured Performers from San Francisco Ballet and Ballet Manila
Leading the cast on the evening of May 30 at 8:00 PM, and on May 31 and June 1 at 5:00 PM, is San Francisco Ballet’s first soloist, Katherine Barkman. Barkman, a former principal dancer of Ballet Manila and a former mentee of Macuja Elizalde, returns to her home stage to take on the demanding dual role of Odette/Odile. Known for her refined technique and strong stage presence, Barkman brings both precision and emotional complexity to her performance.

Partnering with her is Esteban Hernandez, principal dancer of San Francisco Ballet. Hernandez will perform the role of Prince Siegfried. With his powerful stage presence and virtuosic skill, he adds depth and elegance to the character.

In addition to these performances, Ballet Manila offers matinee shows on May 31 and June 1 at 1:00 PM. These feature a new pair in the lead roles: Ballet Manila’s principal dancer Abigail Oliveiro and San Francisco Ballet soloist Nathaniel Remez. This pairing provides audiences with a different interpretation of the characters, allowing for fresh perspectives on the classic story.
An International Collaboration on a Local Stage
This production of Swan Lake is not only a tribute to Ballet Manila’s commitment to classical ballet but also a showcase of international collaboration. The combination of homegrown and international talents gives Filipino audiences the chance to witness exceptional artistry. The presence of acclaimed dancers from the San Francisco Ballet, performing alongside Ballet Manila artists, sets this production apart.
For those who appreciate ballet or are interested in watching it for the first time, this restaging of Swan Lake offers an opportunity to see a full-length classical ballet brought to life with precision and emotional expression.
