On February 28th, following the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, London-based tech company Nothing unveiled the design of its new smartphone, the Phone (2a), a smartphone with a unique design.

Marking the company’s first-ever internal design concept, the Phone (2a), launched in 2020, integrates its components into the external design, showcasing functionalities in innovative ways.

A Smartphone with a Unique Design

Behind the phone’s signature “eyes,” represented by cameras housed within the NFC coil, lies the central processing unit, akin to a brain. Other components are arranged using a circular grid system, extending to the edges for a softer, more rounded look with a larger corner radius.

The Phone (2a) boasts an industry-first 90-degree unibody cover that wraps around the edges, creating a unique visual dimension while seamlessly integrating the dual camera module. This structure not only enhances aesthetics but also improves durability, as evidenced by better drop test results.

For added intrigue, Nothing intentionally designed the lower part of the Phone (2a) to disrupt the flow of the top, creating a sense of asymmetrical balance. The battery cover draws design inspiration from Massimo Vignelli’s iconic New York subway map.

The camera “bump” serves a dual purpose: stabilizing the phone when placed flat and minimizing finger interference during photography.
