Google has introduced new theft protection features for Android, aimed at enhancing security and protecting user data in case of phone theft. The new tools—Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock—were first announced in May at Google I/O 2024, and the rollout began in October 2024.

As detailed in Google’s official blog published in May, these features use AI and various security methods to prevent unauthorized access to stolen phones and the sensitive information they hold.

Theft Detection Lock: AI-Powered Protection

The standout Theft Detection Lock uses artificial intelligence (AI) and motion sensors to detect suspicious movements, such as someone grabbing your phone and running away. When this theft-like motion is detected, the phone locks automatically, securing all user data.

Offline Device Lock: Keeping Data Safe Even When Offline

The Offline Device Lock kicks in if a device goes offline for an extended period, such as when a thief disables Wi-Fi or mobile data to avoid location tracking. This feature automatically locks the device, providing additional security even when the phone is disconnected from the internet.

Remote Lock: A Backup for Lost or Stolen Phones

For situations where users cannot access their device using Find My Device, the Remote Lock feature enables locking the phone through a phone number and a quick security challenge. This feature allows users to secure their phones remotely, giving them more time to recover their account details or perform a full factory reset if needed.

Compatibility and Availability

These new features are gradually being rolled out across Android devices. Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock are compatible with devices running Android 10 and above, while Remote Lock is available on devices running Android 5 Lollipop and later. Users can find the new features by navigating to Settings > Google > Personal & device safety.

Although announced in May, the rollout only began recently, with some users in the U.S. already having access to the features. A wider release is expected over the coming months.

Google continues to strengthen the security of Android devices, helping users protect their personal data even in the unfortunate event of phone theft.
